The Ford Model T was introduced in October of 1908 and the basis for this new model was seen in the earlier N, R, and S models. It was an inexpensive four-cylinder vehicle that had a 22-horsepower engine mounted on a wood and steel frame resting on a 100-inch wheelbase. The engine was now a mono-bloc design with an industry-first removable cylinder head. The engine was coupled to a two-speed planetary transmission similar to that on a Model N, but completely enclosed in a steel crankcase which also contained the engine assembly. The transmission also had a built-in power supply which became the high tension magneto that would power the ignition coils. The early examples of the Model T had a two-lever, two-pedal system of controls. This setup was quickly abandoned in favor of the three-pedal, one-lever arrangement.

Auction entries : 4The chassis of the Model T was comprised of vanadium steel which made it durable, strong and light. Four body styles were offered, with pricing starting at $890.00. At the time, this was literally half of what similar four-cylinder touring cars from other manufacturers were charging. Within a short period of time, sales outstripped supply, and over 10,000 vehicles were sold in its first year. Ford moved production to Highland Park, and by1914, Ford's moving assembly line was in full swing. Ford outsold number 2 Buick by ten to one, and by 1915, one million Model Ts had been produced, and by 1923, 70 percent of the world's vehicles were Ford Model Ts.By the end of 1927 when the Model T was discontinued, over 15 million examples were produced. Its hallmark was its rugged simplicity and it was famously offered in any color so long as it was black. However, all-black did not come until 1914 when in the interest of production line speed, Henry Ford selected black when he concluded it dried the fastest - speeding up production. Before being offered solely in black, the Model T was available in red, gray or green.

Auction entries : 1The previous Ford Model T's had its top support straps fastened to the front of the chassis, but the 1912 design repositioned them to the windshield thing. Mechanical components remained largely unchanged. The L-head four-cylinder had a cast iron block, solid valve lifters, and three main bearings and delivered 22 horsepower at 1,600 RPM. A few of these engines were fitted with Kingston six-ball carburetors, while most others received a Holley H-1 carb. The engine was paired with a planetary two-speed transmission with a multiple disc clutch, and torque tube drive. Braking was handled by a contracting band in the transmission and a hand-operated internal expanding brake on the rear wheels. A foot brake stopped the driveshaft and a parking brake operated the two rear wheel brakes. The 1912 Ford Model T had a 110-inch wheelbase, and an overall length of 128 inches for the chassis and 134.5 inches for all other body styles. It rode on 30 x 3 front and 30 x 3.5 inch rear tires.

The combined roadster production, including the torpedo runabout, was $13,376 examples. Both the torpedo runabout and the roadster had a base price of $590. The delivery car with seating for two listed at $700, with approximately 1,845 examples built. The seven-passenger town car was the most expensive with a base price of $900.
