1951 Allard K2

Sidney Herbert Allard of England built a reputation as a prominent builder of competitive racers. He was a racing driver who used a crashed Ford V8 coupe to which he grafted the body from a Grand Prix Bugatti. Using an American V8 engine, the Allard Special was lightweight and powerful and would provide the inspiration and formula for future Allard products. After World War II, Allard evolved from being a builder of racing specials to series production. The post-war cars continued to use lightweight construction, American V8 power, and an independent front suspension. Despite the limited resources and small size, Allard's achieved impressive racing results and were often contenders for class and overall victory.

The Allard Motor Company was founded in 1946, though Sidney had been building and modifying vehicles since the mid-1930s. The post-war automobiles were mostly powered by Ford flathead V8s and often fitted with Sidney's own intake manifolds and cylinder heads. His J2X Sports racers utilized the Cadillac and Chrysler OHV V8s continuing the tradition of American power in a British alloy body.

In the 1950 Tour of Sicily and the 24 Hours of LeMans, Allard entered a Cadillac-powered J2 racer, finishing in third place. Impressive victories at Watkins Glen, Pebble Beach, Sebring, Monte Carlo, and more followed, often providing podium finishes for its driver.

The J1 two-seater sports car was introduced in 1946 and used a 100-inch wheelbase equipped with Allard's independently suspended 'split' front axle and a DeDion rear end with inboard brakes. Like most of Allard's products, the J1 employed Ford/Mercury-sourced engine and mechanical components.

The K2 was introduced in 1950, following on the heels of the highly successful K1, which was similar to the J1 but with a longer wheelbase. Located in the front of the K2 was a grille that borrowed heavily from a Healey. Large bumpers in the front aided in the event of a collision. There was seating for two and storage for a small amount of luggage. Under the hood could be found a variety of American V8 engines with the 3.6 liter Ford unit being standard. UK-destined examples were often fitted with Ford/Mercury engines while cars bound for the U.S. usually came with either Cadillac or Chrysler power units. Production of the K2 continued until 1952 with 119 examples being produced. About 87 (74%) examples remain in existence.

With torquey V8 engines, a three-speed manual gearbox, and high overall gearing, the Allards were fast and fun to drive. Notable racing drivers in North America include Tom Cole, Zora Duntov, John Fitch, and Carroll Shelby who achieved many successes. Shelby won every race he entered in 1953 with his Allard.
