1954 Chrysler New Yorker

Chrysler's first postwar all-new styling changes were introduced in 1949, the company's 25th Anniversary. They had a simplified egg-crate grille, taller and boxier bodies than previous models, with shortened front and rear overhangs. The New Yorker continued to use the 323.5 cubic-inch straight-eight coupled to Fluid Drive and the Prestomatic four-speed semi-automatic. Body styles were reduced to a four-door sedan, convertible, and club coupe and the wheelbase on the New Yorker increased to 131.5 inches (an increase of four inches).

The final year for the tall and boxy New Yorker was 1954 before all-new Virgil Exner designs were introduced in 1955. Exner had mildly revised the previous year's lineup with smoothing of the basic shape and minor changes to the rear fenders, trim, and grille, along with a modern, one-piece curved windshield. Minor changes continued in 1954. This was the final year for the long-wheelbase 139.5-inch chassis. For 1954, they had a base price of $4,370 and accounted for 140 sales. Deluxe models had a front fender stone shield, and the rear fender stone shield had a horizontal trim piece in the middle. They had unique hubcaps with a flat spinner-like design in a gold color that matched the exterior insignia.

By this point in history, body styles included a Club Coupe, sedan, Newport, and a Town and Country Wagon on a standard wheelbase of 125.5 inches. An eight-passenger sedan was available on the longer wheelbase platform. The New Yorker Deluxe added a convertible and dropped the T & C Wagon. The 'standard' New Yorkers were priced from $3,200 - $4,000 while the Deluxe versions listed for $3,400 - $3,940.

The 1954 New Yorker used a 331.1 cubic-inch, overhead-valve V8 engine with hemispherical-segment combustion chambers. It offered 195 horsepower at 4,400 RPM while the engine in the New Yorker Deluxe increased horsepower to 235 hp.

Chrysler offered two station wagons for 1954, the base model Windsor Deluxe and the up-market New Yorker. The New Yorker Town & Country Wagons were offered in a four-door, six-passenger configuration at a base price of $4,025. They had a disappearing tailgate window and rear-door vent windows. Total production reached just 1,100 examples for the model year, a decrease from the 1,399 sold the prior year.

Due to outdated six-year styling, Chrysler sales for 1954 fell more than forty percent, although the New Yorker Deluxe increased by nearly 25 percent over the 1953 Deluxe. Among the biggest increase was the sedan which rose by over 6,000 examples, to 26,907. The two-door Newport, priced at $3,700, increased from 3,715 in 1953 to 4,814 in 1954.
