1953 Chrysler New Yorker Navigation
For 1953, Chrysler no longer offered the Saratoga series. It was replaced by the New Yorker on the Windsor wheelbase of 125.5 inches. The Newport, convertible, and sedan body styles continued on the New Yorker and were joined by a Club Coupe, Town & Country Wagon, and a long-wheelbase, 8-passenger Sedan. The engine remained the same - a 331.1 cubic-inch unit with hemispherical combustion chambers and overhead valves offering 180 horsepower. A 'V' insignia was placed on the rear decklid and on the hood to denote the Hemi engine. Although the engine remained the same as in prior years, a five percent reduction in overall weight helped improve the performance of the V-8 Chryslers.
Town & Country WagonChrysler also offered the New Yorker Deluxe Series, which was a top-of-the-line model. It came with an additional body style, the convertible coupe, and did not include the Town & Country station wagon. The Deluxe Series had upgraded upholstery, and optional wire wheels, and air conditioning. A Fluid Drive (also known as Fluid-Torque Drive) was standard until it was replaced mid-year by a PowerFlite automatic transmission.
