The new Ford Bronco, launched as a 1966 model, was the company's first dedicated 4x4 sport-utility vehicle, and designed to compete with the off-road Jeep and International Harvester's Scout. Donald N. Frey inspired the Bronco concept. Paul G. Axelrad was responsible for the structural design of the car's chassis. The brakes and axles, including the 9-inch rear axle, were sourced from the Ford F-100 truck. The transfer case was a Dana-sourced unit. The body, frame, and suspension were unique. Through 1971, a tough Dana 30 front axle was utilized. The suspension was comprised of a coil-springs setup in the front and leaf springs at the rear. The Bronco's design was fairly square with flat glass and no-frills bumpers. The short wheelbase carried several body styles including a wagon, pickup-style half-cab, and a Spartan Jeep-style roadster. Inside, there were buck seats in the front, a rear bench seat, and a tachometer. Available items included an auxiliary gas tank, snowplow, winch, tow bar, post-hole digger, and specific tires and wheels. Power was from a 170-cubic-inch six-cylinder engine offering 105 horsepower. The engine was borrowed from the Ford Falcon and came equipped with a heavy-duty fuel pump. The carburetor was equipped with a special float to ensure proper fuel delivery on steep grades. Later in 1966, a 289 cubic-inch V8 became available. A three-speed column-shift manual transmission was the sole gearbox available and automatic transmissions would not be offered until 1973.
