1950 Studebaker Commander

The 1950 Studebaker model lineup consisted of the Champion and the Commander; it had been this way since 1947, and these names would continue through the mid-1950s. For 1950, Champion was the entry-level model, available in 2- and 4-door configurations, including a convertible, along Custom, Deluxe, and Regal Deluxe trim levels. The Champion was powered by a 169.6 cubic-inch L-head six-cylinder engine delivering 85 horsepower.

The Commander used similar trim level designations, including the Deluxe, Regal Deluxe, and Land Cruiser. The Deluxe line consisted of a 2- and 4-door sedan and a Starlight Coupe. Prices began at $1,870 for the two-door sedan and rose to $1,900 for the four-door sedan. The sedan accounted for 11,440 sales, the 2-door had 4,588 sales, and the Starlight Coupe had 4,383 sales.

The Regal Deluxe line had the same body styles as the Deluxe but added a convertible priced at $2,330. Total sales among the Deluxe line were 27,437 units with the sedan having 14,832 of those sales.

The Land Cruiser trim level was a four-door sedan priced at $2,185 and rested on a 4-inch longer wheelbase than the rest of the Commander line, measuring 124 inches. A total of 24,712 examples were sold. Land Cruiser designation was located adjacent to the rear deck lid.

The 1950 Studebaker models received a unique 'bullet-nose' front end and rear fenders that housed vertical taillights. The bullet-nose piece was fully chrome-plated, and Commander identification was placed on the front fenders.

The Automatic Drive was standard, and the suspension was comprised of coil springs and A-arms.

The differences between the Champion and the Commander were the level of trim, interior accouterments, and size. While the Champion had an 85 horsepower engine, the Commander was powered by a 245.6 cubic-inch unit fitted with a Stromberg or Carter one-barrel carburetor, solid valve lifters, four main bearings, and offered 102 horsepower. The Champion had a 113-inch wheelbase, while the Commander was longer, with a 120-inch wheelbase.

The Commander accounted for approximately 22 percent of Studebaker's 1950 sales, while the rest went to the Champion, whose price tags (approximately $400 less than a comparable Commander) appealed to a greater audience. The 320,884 vehicles sold by Studebaker in 1950 earned it ninth in the industry.

The 'bullet nose' front end would remain a styling feature of Studebaker cars through 1952.
