2002 Ferrari 360 Spider

Ferrari replaced the F355 line in 1999 with the 360 Modena utilizing a new all-aluminum space frame. The 360 Modena was not only 28-percent lighter than its predecessor, but it was also 40-percent stiffer. The much-improved chassis was installed in a curvaceous Pininfarina body and powered by a new Tipo F131 3.6-liter V8 engine that utilized a flat-plane crank with titanium connecting rods, and produced nearly 400 horsepower. The engine was paired with a Formula 1-developed 6-speed semi-automatic gearbox that benefited from steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and a computer-controlled, electro-hydraulically operated single-plate clutch. The 360 Modena was capable of accelerating from zero-to-sixty MPH in 4.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 183 MPH.

Production of the 360 lasted from 1999 to 2004 with 8,800 examples of the Modena, 7,565 of the Spider, and 1,288 of the special edition Challenge Stradale.

The 'Modena' was named after the town of Modena, the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari. Instead of being an evolution of the previous model, the 360 Modena was completely new, and Ferrari partnered with Alcoa Alcoa to produce an entirely new all-aluminum space-frame chassis. It was 10-percent later in overall dimensions than its predecessor which allowed a more comfortable interior for its occupants while weighing 28% less than the previous design. The new styling dispensed with the previous decade's sharp angles and flip-up headlights in favor of a more modern, curvaceous outline. Beneath the vehicle, the ground-effect styling eliminated the need for aerodynamic aids such as wings. The 90-degree, 3,568cc engine had a redline of 8,700 RPM, a 3.35-inch bore and a 3.11-inch stroke, and produced 395 horsepower at 8,500 RPM and 275 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 RPM. The engine was just about the only item carried over from the F355, but its displacement increased from 3.5 to 3.6 liters. Unlike the F355's transverse unit, the 360's six-speed gearbox was mounted longitudinally behind the engine and could be ordered with an improved version of the F1-inspired paddle-operated gearshift pioneered on the F355.

The wheelbase measured 102.4-inches and had an overall length of 176.3-inches. 42% of the weight was at the front and 58% was at the rear. This was a rather significant improvement over the F355's weight distribution and complimented the increase in power and reduction in overall weight. Brembo ventilated disc brakes provided the stopping power. The suspension used aluminum double wishbones and coil springs over electronic Sach dampers.

The 360 Spider was Ferrari's twentieth road-going convertible. Ferrari engineers had a Spider variant in mind from the beginning, and since removing the roof of a coupe reduces the torsional rigidity, the 360 received reinforcements in other areas. The sills were strengthened, the front of the floor pan stiffened, and the windscreen frame was redesigned. The rear bulkhead had to be stiffened to cut out engine noise from the cabin. Dynamic rigidity is provided by additional side reinforcements and a cross brace in front of the engine. A strengthened windscreen frame and roll bars ensured passenger safety.

The coupe weighed approximately 60 kg less than the F355, and the Spider weighed 60 kg (130 lb) more than the coupe. The 3.6-liter V8 engine powering the Coupe was used to power the Spider as well, with the engine receiving additional cold air supply through large side grills to compensate for the storage area space used by the convertible top. The intake manifolds were re-positioned in the engine compartment, moving towards the center of the engine and between the air supply conduits.

The electrically operated convertible top was offered in blue, grey, beige, and black colors.

The 360 Spider is Ferrari's 20th road-going convertible and is a record breaker in two quite different ways. Without doubt it is the best spider Maranello has ever produced in terms of engineering, looks and performance. And, thanks to the exclusive experience Ferrari has accumulated as a Formula 1 constructor, it is the most technologically advanced convertible available today. Despite the car's mid-mounted V8 engine Ferrari's engineers have found a way of creating a hood that automatically folds away inside the engine bay, thus ensuring purity of line. The intrinsic quality of the design is underlined by the two fairings in the bodywork to the rear of the seats which evoke memories of classic sports cars. These are matched by the two roll bars that add the final touch to providing maximum safety for the car's two occupants.
