2002 Ferrari 575M Maranello

Rather than being an entirely new model, Ferrari 575M (Modificata) was an evolution of the 550 Maranello which had been introduced in 1997. The 550 Maranello had returned Ferrari to its tradition of building front-engined V12 sports cars, something that had remained dormant since the demise of the 365GTB/4 Daytona in 1974. Powering the 550 Maranello was a 48-valve, 5.5-liter V12 engine offering 485 horsepower, which was approximately 100 more than what had been produced by the Daytona. To help balance the vehicle, the 550 Maranello had a rear transaxle with six speeds. The power train was housed in a tubular steel chassis and the coachwork was formed from aluminum. The all-independent suspension incorporated dual-mode (normal/sports) damping, switch-selectable by the driver, which was complemented by speed-sensitive power-assisted steering.

The classical combination of long bonnet, truncate tail, and small cabin was styled by Pininfarina. The aerodynamics were perfected in the wind tunnel, where hours of testing ensured that the minimum of drag was combined with constant downforce regardless of set up. Past Ferraris, such as the 250GTO, inspired the hot air outlets behind the front wheel arches and the bonnet air scoop.

With the introduction of the 575M, displacement grew to 5,748cc and power increased to 515bhp. A new optional six-speed 'paddle shift' manual gearbox, which had been developed in Formula 1, sent power to the rear wheels. Top speed rose to 202 mph and 0-60mph was accomplished in 4.2 seconds. The front end was revised with updated headlights and a restyled air intake and front spoiler. Weight distribution was improved to 50/50. Larger disc brakes were installed to help cope with the increase in performance. Inside, the interior was modernized with updated trim, dashboard, and steering wheels - along with other minor updates.

Production of the 575M lasted from 2002 through 2006 with 2,056 examples built. 246 examples were equipped with manual transmissions. For 2005, a new GTC handling package and a Superamerica version were introduced with production limited to just 559 examples. The GTC package added a more performance-tuned suspension system, low-restriction exhaust system, Carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon Carbide (C/SiC) composite ceramic brake system (made by Brembo), and unique 19-inch wheels.
