2016 Porsche Cayman GT4

Built for driving enthusiasts, the 2016 Porsche Cayman sets a new standard for performance. Using a longer wheelbase, new chassis and reduced weight compared to the 987, the third generation of this two-seater is now the third Porsche sports car to use state-of-the-art lightweight body construction technology developed by Porsche.

The current Cayman is up to 60 pounds lighter than the previous generation, depending on specific model and equipment, and when equipped with the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) dual clutch transmission, the 275 hp Cayman has a U.S. EPA highway label fuel economy value of 32 mpg, despite an increase in power and torque over the last model. Customers longing for more power can opt for the 3.4 liter S and GTS versions, while the new top-of-the-line Cayman GT4 utilizes a 3.8 liter, 385 hp engine adopted from the 911 Carrera S, as well as brakes and front suspension from the 911 GT3.

The Benchmark in its Class: the Porsche Cayman GT4

Porsche's GT family is proud to announce the addition of an exciting new member: the Cayman GT4. This is the first Porsche GT sports car based on the Cayman and features components of the 911 GT3. Clocking a lap time of 7 minutes and 40 seconds on the North Loop of the Nürburgring, the Cayman GT4 earns the same lap time as the 2011 911 GT3 and positions itself as the new benchmark atop its market segment. The Cayman GT4 clearly demonstrates Porsche's dedication and passion to continue to promote truly industry-leading two-door sports cars in the future – sports cars that are developed at the Motorsport department in Weissach.

The engine, chassis, brakes, and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics while retaining the versatility and everyday utility that are typical of the two-seater Porsche coupe. Powered by a 385 hp 3.8-liter flat-six engine derived from the 911 Carrera S engine, the Cayman GT4 transmits its power solely through a six-speed manual transmission with dynamic gearbox mounts. Zero to 60 mph is accomplished in 4.2 seconds; its top track speed is 183 mph. The chassis – which features a 30 mm lower ride height and a generously sized brake system – consists almost entirely of components from the 911 GT3.

Ready for the race track: The first Porsche Cayman with added downforce at both axles

The exterior of the Cayman GT4 highlights it as a member of the Porsche GT family and provides a clear distinction to related mid-engine coupes. Three pronounced inlet openings at the front and a large fixed rear wing are part of an aerodynamic package which is systematically designed for downforce. Upon request, the performance capabilities of Cayman GT4 can be taken even further. Available options include the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system, full bucket seats made of carbon fiber composite, and a custom Sport Chrono Package featuring a Track Precision app.

The interior of the Cayman GT4 focuses on maximizing the experience of unfiltered driving enjoyment for both driver and passenger. Standard sport seats, which are upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara®, offer excellent lateral support. The new Cayman GT4 sport steering wheel guarantees ideal control and direct steering feedback due to its compact dimensions.

Technical aspects of this new GT sports car are based on the 911 GT3. As a mid-engine sports car and a prime example of driving dynamics in its class, it follows the conceptual tradition of such cars as the 904 GTS, 911 GT1, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder.

GT sports cars engineered by Porsche embody the most passionate connection possible between everyday driving and Porsche's competition heritage and highlight the sporty core of the brand: Intelligent Performance.

The Porsche Cayman GT4 celebrates its world premiere in early March at the Geneva International Motor Show. This vehicle will arrive at U.S. dealers in July 2015. The starting MSRP for the Cayman GT4 is $84,600. MSRP does not include a destination charge of $995.

The new Cayman GT4 with the distinctive mid-engine layout is the long awaited step beyond the boundary, and onto the racetrack. Porsche's tribute to all the motorsport enthusiasts, the GT4 has everything it needs - not just to survive on the racetrack.

With the GT4, performance is united with the great agility and cornering dynamics of a proven mid-engine concept. The naturally aspirated flat-six engine is equipped with a direct fuel injection (DFI), VarioCam Plus. From its capacity of 3.8 liters, it delivers an imperious 385 horsepower at 7400 RPM, and maximum torque of 309 pound feet. The time to 0 to 60 miles per hour is just 4.2 seconds with a top track speed is 183 miles per hour. The output of the engine is transmitted to the road by the particularly lightweight six-speed manual transmission.

The distinctive front spoiler lip on the front apron together with the extra spoiler elements ahead of the wheel arches help to increase aerodynamic downforce.

The origins of the new GT4 are most clearly discernible at the rear end. The fixed wing, with uprights in aluminum, is the very epitome of motorsport. The powerful finale is presented by the black rear apron and diffuser with two centrally positioned tailpipes, also in black. The sound is nothing short of explosive, thanks to the sport exhaust system fitted as standard. The 20-inch alloy wheels have 245/35 ZR 20 tires on 8.5 J front wheels and 295/30 ZR 20 tires on 11 J rear wheels.

Walter Rohl drove a Cayman around Germany's Nürburgring in 8 minutes, 11 seconds.

For 2012, the Cayman and Boxster were revamped with a new platform, additional power, and an available reworked seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

In 2015, Porsche introduced the Cayman GT4. Power was from a 3.8-liter flat-six sourced from the 911 Carrera S. It was equipped with upgraded brakes from the 911 GT3, enhanced aerodynamics, a lowered suspension, and a beefier chassis. Inside was a roll cage, a Recaro racing seat with a six-point harness, and a fire extinguisher.

The GT4 Clubsport made its debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show in racing livery. It had a version of Porsche's PDK dual-clutch gearbox, a mechanically locking rear differential, adjustable ABS brakes, 911 GT3 Cup-supplied suspension components, a full, welded-in cage, and Schroth six-point racing harnesses.

This particular example has just delivery mileage on its odometer, currently showing less than 40 kilometers. The current caretaker acquired it in April of 2016. It is finished in white and has the adjustable rear spoiler, hood pins for the front trunk, and a basic interior which helped keep weight down to about 2,870 lbs. It was optioned from the factory with air conditioning, a boon for stints between the paddock and the track, the air jack system, and a Recaro racing seat from the 991 GT3 Cup.

The car also has a 'Spare Parts Package' which includes two sets of front and rear brake rotors, several sets of brake pads, as well as a set of extra wheels.

Porsche unveiled the 911 GT3 RS in 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show, followed by the Cayman GT4 at the same venue a year later. The latter was the first Cayman model to wear the 'GT' designation and its mid-mounted 385 horsepower naturally aspirated flat-six engine was borrowed from the 991.1 Carrera S. The suspension and steering were sourced from the GT3. On the exterior, the body received enlarged side-air inlets, a fixed wing, and more aggressive front fascia.

The Clubsport boosted the performance of the Cayman GT4 even further and was designed specifically for enthusiasts, amateur drivers, and privateer racing teams seeking a track-only experience. The CLubsport was devoid of unnecessary interior comfort items, reducing weight to a mere 2,866 lbs. Its mechanical specification included a six-speed, dual-clutch PDK transmission with locking differential, adjustable ABS brakes, GT3 Cup suspension components, an FIA-specification roll cage, and a fire-suppression system. The 3,800cc dual overhead camshaft flat 6-cylinder engine with Bosch Electronic fuel management system developed 385 horsepower at 7,400 RPM.

Porsche produced approximately 420 examples of the Cayman GT4 Clubsport, and the model was eligible for several race series around the world.

This particular example is finished in white and is equipped with a 70-liter (18.5-gallon) fuel tank. It was optioned with dual-zone climate control and an upgraded Recaro racing bucket seat with Schroth six-point harness. The car was delivered new to its current caretaker in April 2016. Currently, the Clubsport has 53 Km on its odometer.
