1967 Plymouth Fury

The Fury was part of Plymouth's model lineup from 1955 to 1989, initially serving as a sub-series of the Plymouth Belvedere, becoming a separate series for 1959, and built as a full-size car from 1959 to 1961. From 1962 to 1964, it was a mid-size vehicle, returning to a full-size platform in 1965 and continuing through 1975.

The 1965 model year represented the fourth generation of styling for the Fury, now resting on the full-size Chrysler C-body platform and built along three trim levels - the Fury I, Fury II, and Fury III. The Fury I was the base model, with the II and III receiving a higher level of trim, standard equipment, and accouterments. The highest trim was the Sport Fury, equipped with a sportier interior and exterior trim package.

The station wagons rested on a 121-inch wheelbase with the others using a 119-inch platform. Styling design cues included two vertical stacked headlights on each side, and a sprint front and rear grille motif. The base engine was an overhead valve six with 225 cubic-inch displacement, four main bearings, solid valve lifters, and delivered 145 horsepower.

In 1966, the full-size Fury was joined by the VIP, available as a hardtop sedan and hardtop coupe.

The 1967 model year brought new styling with an angular profile, 'coke-bottle' profiles, a more muscular stance, and curvier, stacked quad headlight bezels set more deeply into the body. A new, formal two-door hardtop body style called the 'fast top' joined the Sport Fury trim.

The Fury I came standard with armrests, vinyl headliner, carpeting, glovebox lock, dual brakes system, brake warning light, flasher, heater and defroster, back-up lights, inside mirror, two-speed wipers wand washers, energy-absorbing steering column, panel dash and visors, and seat belts. Station wagons had an all-vinyl interior. Body styles included a two- and four-door sedan, and a station wagon. Prices began at $2,470 for the two-door sedan, $2,520 for the sedan, and $2,880 for the station wagon. All Fury I models were offered with either six- or eight-cylinder engines. The base engine was the 225 CID six with 145 horsepower. The overhead-valve, 318 cubic-inch V8 had solid valve lifters, five main bearings, a Carter two-barrel carburetor, and delivered 230 horsepower at 4,400 RPM.

The most popular sedan body style on the Fury I was the sedan with 29,354 examples built. 6,647 examples were two-door sedans and 6,067 were station wagons.

Within the Fury II trim level, body styles included the same as the Fury I, with the addition of a nine-passenger station wagon. Both the two- and four-door Fury II sedans came standard with a six-cylinder engine, while the wagons came with V8s. The prices were approximately $100 higher than their Fury I siblings, with the sedan, again, being the most popular with 45,673 examples built. 10,736 were 6-passenger station wagons, 5,649 were 9-passenger wagons, and 2,783 were the two-door sedan.

The Fury II models came with foam seats, cloth and vinyl sedan interiors, bodyside moldings, and bright window accents.

The Fury III added an electric clock, brake warning lamp, glove box light, trunk light, Deluxe cloth and vinyl interiors, and Flow-Through ventilation on the four-door hardtop. Convertibles had an all-vinyl interior and a glass rear window. Body styles included a hardtop coupe, hardtop sedan, sedan, convertible, and a 6- and 9-passenger wagon. The hardtop coupe and sedan came standard with a six-cylinder engine, the rest came with a V8. The hardtop coupe had a base price of $2,765, the hardtop sedan at $2,920, $2,746 for the sedan, and $3,120 for the convertible. The six-passenger wagon listed for $3,145 and the nine-passenger version was $3,250.

The total Fury III production was 160,078 with 52,690 of those being sedans, 43,614 of hardtop sedans, and 37,448 of the hardtop coupe. The convertible accounted for 4,523 units, 9,270 of the six-passenger wagon, and 12,533 of the 9-passenger version.

Pricing on the Sport Fury ranged from $3,030 for the hardtop coupe, $3,062 for the Fast Top Coupe, and $3,280 for the convertible. The combined hardtop coupe and Fast Top Coupe production were 28,448 units, along with 3,133 of the convertible.

The Sport Fury trim level included bucket seats, armrest seat cushion center unit, Deluxe steering wheel, Deluxe 15-inch wheels, body accent strips, fender-mounted turn signals, and Sport wheel covers.

Above the Fury was the VIP (marketed as the 'Very Important Plymouth' in 1966), which came equipped with all the features and amenities found on the Fury III, plus added Deluxe 15-inch wheels, Flow-Through Ventilation, Deluxe wheel covers, Deluxe gold-fleck upholstery with vinyl trim, luxury seats, center armrests, and simulated walnut paneling.

Styling updates were applied to the grille for 1968, reshaped rear doors on four-door models, and all-new sheet metal at the rear. New round-sided 'Fuselage Look' styling was introduced in 1969, defining the appearance used through 1973.
