The Caprice Series was at the top of Chevrolet's 1968 full-size line. It was bestowed with all the features found on the Impala and added a Caprice signature script, fender lights, full wheel covers, unique side molding, and an electric clock. On the inside, the front seat had a center armrest seat. They had courtesy and ashtray lamps and the coupe body styles were given the Astro Ventilation System. Body styles included a 4-door hardtop sedan, a 2-door Formal-Top coupe (also known as the custom coupe), and a 6- and 9-passenger station wagon. The base engine was a new 307 CID Turbo Fire V8 replacing the 283 CID small block. It had overhead valves, a Rochester two-barrel carburetor, five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, and offered 200 horsepower and 300 lbs.-ft of torque.

Auction entries : 1Following a one-year hiatus, the L72 427 cubic-inch Turbo-Jet V8 with 425 horsepower returned to the options list. The formal coupe had a factory base price of $3,220, the hardtop sedan at $3,270, the six-passenger station wagon at $3,460, and the nine-passenger wagon at $3,570. Approximately 115,500 examples of the Caprice were built in 1968, not including station wagons. Additionally, Chevrolet produced around 710,900 Impalas in 1968, around 152,200 Bel Air passenger cars, and circa-82,100 Biscaynes (again, not including wagons). The total full-size wagon production for 1968 was 175,600 units. Chevrolet's full-size model lineup during the early 1960s included the 'entry-level' Biscayne, the mid-priced Bel Air, and the top-of-the-line Impala. Full-size Chevrolet sales reached their pinnacle in 1965 with over a million examples sold.
Series 66 V8 Formal Top CoupeThe Caprice made its debut in mid-1965 and was a trim upgrade for the Impala. It included a sedan, formal hardtop coupe and Estate Wagon. The addition of the Caprice Trim Package added a minimum of $400 or more to the price of the Impala. They added many luxurious amenities include additional sound-deadening materials, more supportive seats, softer sprung suspensions, and other upgrades. Many believe it was a direct response to GM corporate directive ordering division executives to drive cars from their division. Another reason was that Ford had introduced the Galaxie 500 LTD, which many compared with the Rolls-Royce. Thus, Chevrolet created an upscale, premium Impala and dubbed it the Caprice.
