The Alfa Romeo 1900 M, also known by its nickname the Matta (meaning 'mad'), was a four-wheel drive utility vehicle that was produced from 1951 to 1954. During its production lifespan, there were to basic versions made, the AR51 military and the AR52 civilian variant (the AR represented Autovettura da Ricognizione, 'Reconnaissance Car'). Other versions were made for agriculture, firefighting, and road maintenance use. Production was low, with the bulk being produced for the military. 2,007 were the AR 51 for the Italian Army and 154 civilian AR 52 units were produced. The Alfa Romeo 1900 M was powered by a 1884cc twin cam 8-valve four-cylinder engine with dry sump lubrication. It had hemispherical combustion chambers, a cast iron block, and an aluminum cylinder head. They had a 4-speed manual gearbox with low ratio transfer box and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes with a mechanical handbrake on the driveshaft.
