1964 Dodge 440 Series

The Dodge 440 name arrived in 1962 as part of the compact Dart lineup, and received all the features found on the Dodge Dart and Dart 300 plus added backup lights and exterior molding. The following year, it became its own Series and rode on a wheelbase that measured 119-inches, which it shared with the Polara and the 330. Bodystyle options included a 2- and 4-door sedan, a hardtop coupe, and a station wagon.

The 1964 Dodge 440 two-door sedan had a factory base price of $2,400, the sedan listed for $2,450, and the two-door hardtop was priced at $2,480. All body styles, except for the 9-passenger station wagon, came standard with a six-cylinder engine. The 170- and 225 CID six-cylinder engines were joined this year by the 273 CID V8 engine powertrain options. The 170 CID 'Slant' Six had overhead valves, 8.2:1 compression, a Carter one-barrel carburetor, four main bearings, and delivered 101 horsepower at 4,000 RPM. The 225 'Slant' Six had 8.4:1 compression and delivered 145 horsepower at 4,000 RPM. The 273 CID V8 used overhead valves, a Carter two-barrel carburetor, hydraulic valve lifters, five main bearings, and delivered 180 horsepower at 4,200 RPM. A three-speed manual transmission was standard, with the three-speed TorqueFlite automatic optional (a $172 option).

The 1964 Dodge 440 came with all the features found on the 330 line plus added carpeting, '440' insingias, and front foam cushions. Dodge built a total of (approximately) 58,700 examples of the 440 Series in 1964, with the majority (48,500) being equipped with V8 engines. Additionally, 30,300 examples of the station wagon were built on the 330 and 440 Series combined. The 440 accounted for approximately twelve percent of Dodge's 1964 production.
