The Volkswagen Type 3 was produced from 1961 to 1973 with 2,542,382 examples built during that time. Volkswagen introduced the Type 3 at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor Show and was marketed as the Volkswagen 1500, later becoming the Volkswagen 1600. It was available in three body styles including a two-door Notchback, station wagon, and a fastback. The station wagon was later marketed as the 'Squareback.'

The Type 3 had body-on-chassis construction and air-cooled 4-cylinder engine in 1.5-liter (later enlarged to 1.6-liter) configuration.
