The Chevrolet El Camino catered to light-truck customers who were seeking more creature comforts, a smoother ride, and impressive styling. Both Ford and Chevrolet produced gentrified versions of their pickup trucks, with the Ford version being a two-door Fairlane with its back half chopped off. It was called the Ranchero and two years later, in 1959, Chevrolet responded in a similar fashion to the El Camino. The Chevrolet El Camino was produced from 1959 through 1960, and again from 1964 through 1987. The 1985 version was part of the fifth generation and by this point, was being produced in Mexico. A new fuel-injected 4.3-liter V6 was the base engine through 1987. Chevrolet contracted with famed Choo Choo Customs Inc. to build 15 one-off special El Camino SS pace trucks. These were the only trucks to ever pace an IROC race. These IROC-S pace trucks had the trademark aerodynamic front end design and IROC-S urethane paint in custom candy colors. The stripes, lettering, and graphics were all painted on. Approximately fifteen IROC-S's were built between 1985 and 1986.

As the horsepower wars continued to heat up during the 1960s, Chevrolet gave the El Camino the same SS396 as the Chevelle on which it was then based, even installing the mighty 454 LS6 in 1970. Through the 1970s and 80s, Chevrolet remade the El Camino with two-tone paint schemes, graphics packages, and higher-grade interior appointments. The Super Sport model remained successful through the 1980s until production came to a close in 1987.
