1986 BMW E30 M3

The M3, launched in 1986, was the first purpose built BMW saloon designed specifically for racing. These were 'homologation specials' that had a track and wheelbase optimized for racing. Power was from a high revving 2.3-liter four-cylinder 16 valve engine mated to a close ratio 5 speed gearbox with a direct drive top gear. Improvements were made throughout the vehicle, including fully optimized brakes and suspension. Bodystyles initially included a coupe, with a convertible soon added to the lineup.

The first generation E30 was produced from 1986 through 1991.
