1934 Lancia Astura

Torino-based Lancia produced its first automobile in 1907 and was the work of engineer and racing driver Vincenzo Lancia. Lancia would build a reputation for its reliability and technical innovations. In 1922, Lancia introduced the Lambda model, which was the world's first production car with monocoque construction and independent front suspension. Power was from a V-4 engine, had four-wheel brakes, and clothed in lightweight coachwork. From 1931 through 1939, Lancia produced the Astura, serving as a replacement for the Lambda. Along with the V8-powered Astura, Lancia also produced the four-cylinder Artena during this time.

The Astura was built in four series, with the first last from 1931 to 1932, with 496 examples produced. The second series began in 1932 and continued for a year, with 750 examples made. Major changes introduced during this time included modified engine mounting points which reduced noise and vibration. Powering the first and second generations was a 2,606cc (2.6-liter) narrow-angle V8 single overhead cam engine breathing through a single carburetor and delivering just over 70 horsepower.

A total of 1,243 examples of the third-generation Astura were built between 1933 and 1937. Short- and long-wheelbase versions were offered, and a larger engine was introduced. Power was supplied by a 17-degree 3.0-liter V8 offering 82 horsepower. The larger and more powerful engine added low-end torque to help carry the larger wheelbases and more luxurious coachwork. Additionally, chassis improvements were made, including power-assisted brakes, adjustable rear shock absorbers, central chassis lubrication, and an easier-to-use gearbox. The final generation of the Astura began in 1937 and continued until 1939, with 423 examples built. During this time, only the long-wheelbase platform was offered.

The Lancia Astura was introduced in November of 1931 and produced through 1939 with 2,484 examples built. Lancias traditional naming scheme for their cars used the letters of the Greek alphabet, but the Astura broke from that path and displayed a new Italian nationalism, named after an ancient island castle south of Rome.
