1903 Franklin Model A

Herbert Henry Franklin was a Syracuse, New York-based industrialist who became enamored with an automobile built by a Cornell-educated engineer named John Wilkinson. By 1902, Franklin's company was producing Wilkinson's car. Among the unique features of Mr. Wilkinson's design was to employ weight-saving techniques, including lightweight suspension components, tubular axles, and dispensing with cooling water. The bodies were formed from aluminum over laminated ash frames, and aluminum was used extensively in drive trains. While many cars of the era valued 'form over function,' Mr. Wilkinson took the unconventional approach, placing functionality as paramount. His designs were devoid of ornamentation, and beginning in 1905, adopted a 'barrel front' hood with a simple screen at the front to allow cooling air in. Later vehicles used a Renault-style 'scuttle hood' before switching to a 'horse collar' grille.
