The International Race of Champions (IROC) was an auto racing competition that placed the world's greatest drivers in identically prepared stock cars prepared by a single team of mechanics. Although 'International' was part of the racing series name, it was primarily a North American-based series that competed mostly on oval track racing.

The series began in 1973, with Mark Donohue being the first driver to win the championship (in 1974). During the first season, drivers used Porsche Carrera RSRs. Chevrolet Camaro's were used from 1975 to 1989; Dodge Daytonas from 1990 to 1994; and a Dodge Avenger in 1994 and 1995. From 1996 to 2006, the races were contested with Pontiac Trans Ams.

1984 IROC VIII
1984 was the eighth year of the IROC series and twelve contestants competed in identically prepared Chevy Camaros. The first and fourth races were at Michigan International Speedway, the second race was at Burke Lakefront Airport, and race three was on the Talladega Superspeedway.

Cale Yarborough, the 1983 Daytona 500 winner and three-time Winston Cup Champion, won the 1984 series with 58 points and earned $150,000 in prize money. Neil Bonnett was second with 55 points ($75,000 prize money). He was 6th in 1983 Winston Cup Points, the 1981 Southern 500 winner, and a two Time World 600 Winner. In third place was Darrell Waltrip (52 points / $35,000) - he was 2nd in the 1983 Winston Cup points. Benny Parsons was 4th, Gordon Johncokc was 5th, Derek Bell was 6th, and Danny Ongais placed 7th. In 8th place was Johnny Rutherford followed by Dale Earnhardt in 9th, Tom Sneva in 10th, Emerson Fittipaldi in 11th, and Jacky Ickx in 12.
