1948 Packard Super Eight news, pictures, and information

Standard Closed Wheelbase Sedan
Chassis Num: 784503

Sold for $9,350 at 2009 RM Auctions.
The 22nd Series of Packard's was introduced in August of 1947. Since Packard did not limit itself to model year changeovers unlike its larger competitors, the new models were marketed until May 1949. These new Packard models had clean and streamlined 'Free-flow' styling. There were radically rounded with an elongated hood and an 'ox-yoke' upper grille with horizontal, wraparound lower grille. They were elegant, modern, and attractive. The New York Fashion Academy chose the new 22nd Series Packard line as its 'Fashion Car of the Year' for 1948.

This 1948 Packard Super Eight was powered by a 327 cubic-inch eight-cylinder engine with Carter two-barrel carburetor and offering 145 horsepower. There is a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. The 120-inch wheelbase is suspended in place by an independent front suspension with coil springs, and a solid rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs.

The Packard Super Eight name would continue until 1951, when the entire range of Packard's motorcars was renamed. The Super Eights were renamed 300.

In the late 1990s, the car was stripped to bare metal and then refinished in blue. It retains its original grey interior and correct Packard 327 engine.

In 2009, this car was brought to RM Auctions 'Vintage Motor Cars of Meadow Brook' where it was estimated to sell for $20,000-$30,000 and offered without reserve. As bidding came to a close, the lot was sold for the sum of $9,350 including buyer's premium.

Victoria Convertible Coupe

The 1948 Packard Super Eight was powered by a 327 cubic-inch Straight 8-cylidner engine offering 145 horsepower. The cars rode on a 120-inch wheelbase and fitted with soft springs giving it a smooth ride. They had electro-hydraulic power seats, windows and tops. In total, 3,486 examples were produced at a price of $3,250.

This Super 8 has been owned by the same owner for nearly two decades. A group-up restoration was completed in 1999 and a 'freshening up' was performed in 2010.

Sold for $66,000 at 2011 RM Auctions.
Most of the 22nd Series Packard styling was done at Briggs Manufacturing Company, Packard's body supplier, under the guidance of chief designer Albert Prance. The design used the flat side profile of Kaiser with a shortened Packard grille. These new post-War cars were introduced on July 25th of 1947. The first vehicle to enter production was the Convertible Victoria, a body style that had been absent from the catalog since the war.

The Fashion Academy of New York deemed the car the 'Fashion Car of the Year.'

This Victoria Convertible has been given a full restoration and finished in black with black canvas top. It is equipped with a power top, power windows, power seat and overdrive. There is a radio and vacuum-operated antenna and an under-seat heater for passenger comfort. Inside, there was black-and-white leather upholstery and the car rode on chrome wire wheels with Packard hexagon hub caps. There are twin side mirrors and a Packard spotlight.

In 2011, the car was offered for sale at RM Auction's Arizona sale where it was estimated to sell for $70,000 - $90,000 and offered without reserve. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of $66,000, inclusive of buyer's premium.
