The Volkswagen Type 2, also known as the Transporter, began gracing the roadways in 1950. Within a short amount of time, these vehicles grew in popularity and were often seen traveling the United States highways. The engine was mounted in the rear but was still air-cooled. Access to the engine was simple and made repairs rather easy. Driving was calm and quiet since the engine was in the back the driver was not plagued with engine noises.
