1961 Ford Falcon

The Ford Motor Company's Falcon nameplate was launched for the 1960 model year and would continue through 1970, serving during much of its lifespan as a compact model. Body styles ranged from two and four-door sedans to station wagons, convertibles, sedan deliveries, two-door hardtops, and the Ranchero car/pickup hybrid. The Falcon would eventually serve as the basis for the first-generation Mustang that made its debut in 1964.

When introduced, the Ford Falcon was an economical, affordable, and nimble alternative to the large, road-going, thirsty cars that roamed the American motorways. It was well-received thanks in part to the painful recessions, and oil supply shortage in the wake of the Suez Crisis that took place during 1967.

The Falcon offered accommodations for up to six occupants, plus offering adequate space for cargo. Although it offered basic features, trimmings, and amenities, it was comfortable and attractively styled. Base power was supplied by a standard 'Falcon Six' displacing 144 cubic-inches mated to a choice of three-speed manual or two-speed automatic transmission.

For 1961, Ford offered a 170 cubic-inch 'six' for the Falcon, boosting horsepower to just over 100 horsepower while offering excellent fuel economy. In the front was a new convex grille. The most popular body style for 1961 was the 4-door sedan which saw nearly 160,000 examples sold. Nearly 150,000 examples of the 2-door sedan also found willing buyers. Pricing began at slightly more than $2,200 for the 2-door sedan and rose to nearly $2,600 for the 4-door station wagon.
