1961 Imperial Crown

1961 Imperial Crown

Chrysler design chief Virgil Exner's Imperial, 'America's Most Carefully Built Car,' was the company's top-of-the-line offering for 1961 and came powered by a 350 horsepower version of the 413 cubic-inch 'Wedge' V8 fitted with a single four-throat carburetor and mated to a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission, and operated by dashboard-mounted pushbuttons. It wore Classic Era styling cues that included free-standing head and tail lamps, body-side chrome 'sweeps,' and the imprint of a 'continental' spare in the rear deck lid. In keeping with the trends of the time, it had towering tailfins, large bumpers with generous amounts of chrome, and a jet cockpit-inspired interior complete with a squared-off steering wheel and body-color dashboard.

Body styles included a 2- and 4-door hardtop and a convertible. The four-door was the most popular with 4,769 examples built with a factory base price of $5,650. The two-door version sold for $5,400 and 1,007 were built. The convertible was the most exclusive and expensive, with a base price of nearly $5,800 and 429 sold.

Both the Imperial Crown and Imperial Custom models were nearly identical, however, the Crown came with a power seat, vanity mirror, power windows, an outside rearview mirror, and a rear license plate frame. Like the Custom, power steering and power brakes were standard. Both the Custom and Crown rested on a 129-inch wheelbase and rode on 8.20x15 tires.
