The Gran Sport started life back in 1965 as many GM intermediate muscle cars did, as an option on an existing model. It became one of the most formidable muscle cars, from a company not normally associated with performance. The GS option on rear-wheel-drive Buick's came to an end in 1975 on the Century A-Body platform. It was just a mere shell of its former glory, as were all other dying muscle cars.Buick rear-wheel-drive performance returned in the 1980's on the Regal G-Body platform, only this time with a turbo V6 and new identities....the T-Type and Grand National.
This Buick Regal GS prototype is the Gran Sport model that General Motors never built, similar to what Oldsmobile did with the 442 of the 1980's. It is designed and customized with 99% GM parts, as a factory GS model would be.
The Gran Sport name did surface again in the 1980's, but only on front-wheel-drive models. It continued through the year 2000, powered by Buick's famous 3800 V6 engine.

Frequently sharing the same body and power-train as the Century, the Buick Regal was a mid-size vehicle that was produced by General Motors Buick division from 1973 through 2004. Slow to react to develop in the lower priced mid-size personal luxury market, Buick wanted to market to compete against the Olds Cutlass Supreme, the Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo.
