In 1996, the Mazda Miata MX-5 convertible sold for $18,450. The dual-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine received a boost in power, rising from 128 to 133 hp. The car received a Side Protection System which - along with the benefits and safety - added extra weight. Thankfully the boost in horsepower was able to offset this extra weight. A five-speed manual gearbox was standard with a four-speed automatic available as optional equipment.
