1962 Chrysler Newport

The Chrysler Newport was the entry-level model from 1961 to 1981, and the name originated in 1940 on a show car, of which five vehicles were produced. The name was later used on a hardtop body style.

The 1960 Chrysler vehicles received unibody construction, and the entry-level Windsor model was built on the short-wheelbase platform that measured 122 inches, four inches shorter than the Saratoga, New Yorker, and the 300F. It was powered by a 383 cubic-inch V8 engine with five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, a Carter two-barrel carburetor, and delivered 305 horsepower at 4,800 RPM.

For 1961, the Newport became the entry-level model, built atop the 122-inch wheelbase platform which it shared with the Windsor, and powered by a 361 CID V8 with 265 horsepower. The Windsor continued to employ the 383 CID with 305 hp. The three Windsor body styles were from the discontinued Saratoga model, but with styling similar to the Newport. This was the final year for the Virgil Exner-designed tail fins.

The 1962 Chrysler Newport received minor styling updates, retained similar mechanical details, and continued to be available in six body styles with most of the prices being the same as the previous year. The sedan was priced at $2,965, the hardtop coupe at $3,205, the hardtop sedan at $3,100, and a convertible at $3,400. The six-passenger station wagon listed at $3,478 and the nine-passenger version was approximately $110 higher. The most popular body style was the sedan with 54,813 examples built, followed by 11,910 of the hardtop coupe, 8,712 of the hardtop sedan, and 2,051 of the convertible. The six-passenger station wagon was slightly more popular than the nine-passenger version, with 3,271 of the six- and 2,363 of the nine-passenger version. The combined 83,120 units of the 1962 Newport was higher than the 57,102 units the previous year and the 75,972 units built-in 1963. Sales of the 1962 Newport accounted for approximately sixty-five percent of Chrysler's overall sales. Chrysler's total sales rose by over ten percent, however, its position within the market remained the same, at 11th place in U.S. sales.

All 1962 Chrysler models, except for the New Yorker, used the 122-inch wheelbase. The 1961 through 1964 Newport station wagons had hardtop body styling and were devoid of the 'B' pillar.

The most visual styling update to the 1962 Newport was the loss of the Exner-designed tailfins and the indented side body style. The front grille had horizontal bars and rested above a straight bumper and was flanked by slanted headlamps. The canted headlight design had first appeared on Lincoln vehicles and briefly on Buicks before being adopted by Chrysler in 1961. The 1961 Newport taillamps had been located in the deck lid latch panel but were now positioned wrapped over the rear fenders. A body accent panel traversed the body side, from the front to the rear at mid-level.

The 1961 Chrysler Newport had won the Mobil Oil Economy run with an average fuel economy rating of 19.9 mpg. A reduction in weight for the 1962 Newport along with improved engine efficiency resulted in an increase of seven percent in claimed fuel economy. The New Yorker won the luxury class in the 1962 Mobil Gas Economy Run with just over 18 mpg.

The 1962 Newport was powered by a 361.8 cubic-inch V8 engine with overhead valves, five main bearings, a Stromberg two-barrel carburetor, a 9.0:1 compression ratio, and delivered 265 horsepower at 4,400 RPM. The standard transmission was a three-speed manual with non-synchromesh on first and floor shift controls. A three-speed automatic transmission was a $227 option.

The 1963 Newport, New Yorker, and 300 were restyled for 1963, with the design continuing for 1964 but receiving small, chrome-topped fins. The 1965 Newport introduced a new generation of styling and was now built atop the all-new Chrysler C platform, which it shared with the New Yorker and the 300 (and the Plymouth Fury and Dodge Polara). The wheelbase grew to 124 inches and the square line styling was similar to the Lincoln Continental. The standard V8 engine was the 383 CID with two-barrel carburetion and 270 horsepower.

The 1981 Chrysler Newport, along with other R-body models, were discontinued after a brief run of 1981 models, as Chrysler turned its focus towards smaller front-wheel-drive vehicles that were better suited to the oil and gasoline shortages of the era.
