1988 Mazda RX-7 Navigation
The big news for 1988 was the addition of a convertible to the RX-7 lineup, joining the coupe 2-seater and 2+2 hatchback coupe. Available options included the SE, GTU, GXL, and Turbo. Pricing began at $15,480 for the SE Coupe and rose to over $20,000. The base engine was a Wankel with two coaxial three-lobe rotors. It displaced 80 cubic inches and offered 145 horsepower. With the help of the turbocharger, horsepower rose to 182 BHP. A five-speed manual gearbox was standard equipment. The convertible had three folding positions: open, closed, or Targa-style. The convertible also came with a Windblocker device that prevented air from entering the passenger area from the rear. It consisted of a hinged panel, which also helped reduce wind noise and air turbulence. To help keep the passengers warm when the top was down, it came with a high-output heater. All models came standard with a theft-deterrent system. GXL models rode on 15-inch wheels and tires versus the 14-inch which came on the base models. They also had Auto Adjusting Suspension, which had a choice of Normal or Sport ride.

This project continued until 1973, when the oil crisis finally put an end to the car. Around 1975 Sinpei Hanaoka,....

The most famous aspect of this vehicle is probably the engine. It was a revolutionary engine created by Felix Wankel and named the Wankel Rotary Engine. Inside an elongated chamber, a rotor with three curved sides revolves around a central driveshaft. Air and fuel enter from the sides and are compressed as the rotor spins. The result is the equivalent of a conventional combustion chamber. During....
