The Mazda RX-7 received a styling update for 1986 and a 2+2 model. Power was from the Wankel rotary engine, which featured two coaxial three-lobe rotors and an 80 cubic-inch displacement size. Power was rated at nearly 150 horsepower, and with the optional turbocharger installed, that figure rose to 182 horsepower. Gearbox options were either the standard five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.

The RX-7's rigid rear axle was replaced by a fully independent suspension called the Dynamic Tracking Suspension system. The recirculating-ball unit was replaced with a rack-and-pinion system. Disc brakes could now be found at all four corners as standard equipment.

The RX-7 came as a coupe or 2+2 (the turbocharged engine was only available on the coupe). A GXL version was available and added 15-inch tires and an Auto Adjusting Suspension system also seen on the 626 series. This gave the driver the option to select between Normal or Sport ride.

A Sport Package was also offered by Mazda, which gave the RX-7 a front air dam, rocker-panel skirts, larger 16-inch tires, and a spoiler. Customers who ordered the RX-7 with the turbocharger also received a wide hood scoop, front air dam, limited-slip differential, electric sunroof, tilt wheel, upgraded stereo, power windows, power door locks, and a sport-tuned suspension.
