1959 Mercury Monterey

For twenty-two years, the Monterey was part of the Mercury lineup, including most of the 1950s and 1960s. During that time, it served as Mercury's flagship, mid-range, and entry-level offering of the full-size Mercury product range.

For 1955, the Monterey's status as Mercury's top-of-the-line model was replaced by the Montclair. That was also the year it gained larger brakes, an independent ball-join front suspension, and a 292 cubic-inch Y-block engine from the Thunderbird, delivering 188 horsepower with the standard transmission or 198 hp with the Merc-O-Matic. Another new engine was introduced in 1956, a 312 CID V8 with 235 horsepower. Safety door locks became standard, and a deep-dish steering wheel was added to enhance safety.

1957 Mercury full-size vehicles received a complete redesign, growing larger and riding on an exclusive 122-inch wheelbase platform with a new frame design that allowed the floor to be lowered, allowing the car to look lower and longer than in the past. 20 additional horsepower was gained from the 312 CID Ford Y-block engine, and the 290 horsepower 368 CID Lincoln Y-block V8 was now optional. Another all-new engine followed in 1958, the 383 CID MEL V8 came with the Multi-Drive three-speed automatic transmission.

The 1959 Mercury came standard with an overhead valve, 312 CID V8 with five main bearings, a Holley two-barrel carburetor, and delivered 210 horsepower at 4,400 RPM. The front-end styling was inline with Ford models, the previous year's bumper-integrated grille being replaced with a separate honeycomb grille with a wraparound bumper that housed the signal lights. Dual round headlights were on either side of the hood, and above the grille. The large wraparound windshield curved upwards, and the rear glass area size also increased.

Body styles on the 1959 Mercury Monterey included a two-door hardtop sedan priced at $2,650, a two-door sedan at $2,770, a hardtop sedan at $2,920, a sedan at $2,830, and a convertible priced at $3,150. The sedan was the most popular, with 43,570 examples produced. 17,232 of the two-door hardtop sedan was built and 12,694 of the two-door sedan. The convertible was the most exclusive with 4,426 examples built. The only other convertible in the Mercury lineup was the Park Lane, priced at $4,200, and 1,257 examples were built.

The Monterey's 126-inch wheelbase size was shared with other 1959 Mercurys except for the Park Lane, which measured 128 inches.

Optional equipment on the 1959 Mercury's included a signal-seeking radio, windshield washer, electric clock, backup lights, two-tone paint, clear plastic seat covers, seat belts (at $12.25 each), power steering, power brakes, power windows, dual exhaust, safety speed monitor, and push-button radio (among others).

Mercury Monterey's had three chrome bands on the upper rear fender, in front of the taillights, and a horizontal ribbed rear panel. Two-door and four-door sedans had a unique roofline, and the backup lights of two-door and four-door hardtop models curved upwards.
