1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

For 1966, the Chevrolet Chevelle was given a new body with forward slanted front fenders, new body lines, and a wider anodized aluminum grille. In the back was a new body cove treatment. The base models were the Chevelle 300 and were available as a 2- or 4-door sedan. Pricing began at $2,160 and approximately 28,600 examples were built. Most (roughly 23,300) were powered by a six-cylinder engine.

The Chevelle 300 Deluxe models were given body-side moldings, rear fender nameplates, and painted rear quarter reveal moldings. Other distinguishable features included tailgate molding and emblems on the station wagons. Inside was a dual-spoke steering wheel with a horn ring, along with a color-keyed upper instrument panel with bright lower panel trim strip. The rear armrests had a build-in ashtray and the interiors were either cloth or vinyl upholstery. Body styles included a 2- or 4-door sedan and a station wagon. Approximately 37,500 of the 300 Deluxe were built.

The Chevelle Malibu models - also available with either a six- or eight-cylinder engine - were available as a 4-door sedan, 2- or 4-door hardtop, convertible, or station wagon. These models had Malibu nameplates, a hood windsplit molding, rear cove outline molding surrounding the single-unit rear lights with built-in backup lamps. The insides were luxurious with a cloth or vinyl upholstery (the station wagons and convertibles came in all-vinyl). They had a unique dual-spoke steering wheel, black crackle-finish on the instrument panel upper section, a bright-backed rearview mirror, and a glove compartment light. They also had floor carpeting and bright roof rails.

Approximately 241,500 Chevelle Malibus were built, not including the station wagons. Approximately 189,300 were powered by V8 engines.

The Chevelle SS-396 models came equipped with a 396 cubic-inch V8 rated at 325 horsepower. A total of 72,272 examples were built and had a base price of $2,275 for the 2-door hardtop. A convertible was available, with a base price of $2,960. The Chevelle Super Sport was the performance package for the Chevelle lineup. Along with its potent powerplant, they had twin simulated air intakes, ribbed color-accented body sill, and rear fender lower moldings. They had the SS-396 grille and rear cover emblems and Super Sport script located on the rear fenders. They had five nylon red-stripe tires and specific wheel covers. The inside was all-vinyl, with bench front seat standard and fitted with all the features found on the Malibu, except for color-keyed vinyl-coated cargo floor mat and textured vinyl cargo area sidewalls.
