2000 Ferrari 360 Challenge

The Ferrari 360, being replaced by the Ferrari F430, was available as a Modena coupe and spider convertible. The Challenge version was created to compete in the Ferrari Challenge one-make racing series. This 8-cylinder series began in 1993 with the 348 Berlinetta and allowed road-going GT car owners to compete on the track. In 1995, it was the turn of the F355 to handle racing duties, thanks to a special kit developed in-house by Ferrari. The 2000 season witnessed the debut of the 400 horsepower, V8-engined 360 Modena Challenge alongside the F355. The output produced by the racing version is the same as the standard road car but incorporates a number of modifications designed to radically improve its performance in track use.

Unlike its predecessors, the 360 Challenge was the first 'Challenge' series car that was a factory-built and supplied race car, as opposed to a road car with a 'Challenge' upgrade kit. Although it had similar power outputs, the 360 Challenge could easily outperform its road counterpart thanks to the weight reduction, added aerodynamic elements, and improved handling features. The Gold colored calipers and larger floating 2-piece disc brakes were courtesy of Brembo, and Bosch provided the race-oriented ABS software.

The 3.6-liter, 400-horsepower V8 engine has twin overhead camshafts and five valves per cylinder. It is paired with a six-speed electrohydraulic-actuated automated manual F1 paddle-shift gearbox and there are four-wheel disc brakes to provide the stopping power. The steering is a rack-and-pinion unit, and safety upgrades include the full racing cage, onboard fire extinguishing system, Premier Fuel Systems filler, plus track tow-loops fixed at the front and rear. The interior trim is done in lightweight carbon fiber, the door panels were excluded for weight-saving measures, and located at all four corners are BBS wheels. The exhaust system was lightened substantially and it even allowed for increased power output over the standard engine. The suspension and brakes were upgraded to handle the rigors of competition.

The 360 Challenge was a significantly modified, non-road legal car. Zero-to-sixty mph was accomplished in 3.9 seconds and the top speed was limited to 298 km/h (185 mph). Fewer than 200 examples were produced.
