The Terraplane line began in 1932 - during the Great Depression - serving as a 'junior' model to its parent company, the Hudson Motor Car Company. When introduced, it was the Essex Terraplane, but by 1934, it was simply the Terraplane. By 1937, the Terraplane line consisted of the Series 71 and Series 72, both resting on a 117-inch wheelbase and both fitted with L-head six-cylinder engines displacing 212 cubic inches. The standard output was 96 hp with an optional version that added an additional 11 horsepower. A three-speed sliding gear transmission and four-wheel Bendix drum brakes were standard.

Terraplane also produced an expanded line of Series 70 and Series 78 Commercial vehicles.

By 1937, the Hudson and Terraplane were nearly identical, with the few distinct features being their wheelbase size, grille design, and the hood length. The Terraplane also had domed taillight lenses, different hubcaps, and the hood louver panel were slightly different.
