1973 Plymouth Satellite Navigation
Plymouth introduced the Satellite in 1965 as the top trim model in the company's 'B' platform Belvedere line. It remained the top-of-the-line model until 1967, when the GTX took over the title. A new design introduced for the 1971 model year brought about the third generation of the Satellite. Its 'fuselage' style was in-line with the larger Chrysler C-Body models and body styles included a coupe, 2-door hardtop, sedan, and station wagon. Trim levels included the Custom, Brougham, Sebring, and Sebring Plus.
Custom SedanAs the glorious high horsepower days of the 1960s continued to fade from sight, the 1970s brought more attention to luxury and safety. The Satellite embraced this trend with manual disc brakes, steel beam door construction, and new bumpers in compliance with federal impact standards. The two-door models rested on a 115 inch platform while the four-door measured 117 inches. The base engine was a 225 cubic-inch six-cylinder with 110 (SAE) net horsepower. A three speed manual was standard with an automatic optional. Trim levels included the Custom, Sebring, Satellite Plus, and Road Runner. Body styles included sedan, coupe, hardtop coupe, and 6- and 9-passenger station wagons. The base eight-cylinder engine was the 318 CID which had 150 SAE horsepower. Buyers seeking the 'Six-Pack' induction were disappointed to learn that it was no longer available. All of the engines received the new EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system, offset spark advance, and electric choke. The trim levels were distinguishable by their various grilles, brightwork, and insignias. The grille was flanked by dual headlights on either side with metal, rectangular housings. The Custom and Regent station wagons had headlights resting in Argent Silver finished housings. The Road Runner Hardtop Coupes had a center power bulge on its hood.
