The Volvo Amazon series, introduced in 1965, began with the 121 and 122 models and quickly established a reputation for reliability, comfort, affordability, and safety. Numbers models followed, including the 121, 122, 122S, 122 (an updated version designated B18), 131,133S, 133, 221/222, and the 123GT 'Sport' version of 1968. The 123GT (133) combined the two-door chassis platform (130) with a high-compression version of the B18B engine backed by an M41 four-speed transmission with electric overdrive. The B18B engine, sourced from the P1800, delivered 115 horsepower making it 15 horsepower more powerful than the standard 122 engine. The suspension was upgraded with shock absorbers, and power-assisted disc brakes were in the front while the drums were at the wheel. There were front fog and driving lights, fender-mounted mirrors, a special steering wheel and dashboard, and fully reclining seats. The factory hoped to produce approximately 5,000 examples of its 123GT, however, production fell short of those estimates with around 1,500 units being built. Currently, approximately 31 examples are known to exist in the United States. The 'high performance', limited production Volvo 123GT was never officially sold in the United States.
