In May of 1985 the Alfa Romeo Giuletta and Alfetta were replaced by the 75. The vehicle was named the '75' to commemorate Alfa Romeo's 75 years in the automotive business. It stayed in production until 1992 during which 187,000 examples were produced. The versions sold in the United States were dubbed the Alfa Romeo Milano. It shared many of the components of its predecessors, and was available as a four door, five-seater saloon. The engine was in the front and powered the rear wheels. Weight distribution was optimal thanks to the gearbox mounted in the rear.
A 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liter four cylinder engines were available. A turbocharged diesel 2.0 liter four-cylinder was also available. Performance was further increased with the 2.5 or 3.0 liter V-6 engine. The 3.0 liter V-6 was added in 1987. From 1987 through 1989 the only engines offered in the United States were the 2.5 and 3.0 V6s. The rear suspension was a DeDion assembly with shock absorbers while the front was a torsion bar and shock absorber combination.
In 1992 the Alfa Romeo 75 was replaced by a new front-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo 155.
