The NSU 1200 was powered by a four-cylinder 71.8 cubic-inch engine that produced 69 horsepower. The horsepower was later increased to 73. It had similar dimensions as the 110 and rode on a 96 inch wheelbase.
During the 1950's the NSU company had tried their luck in the automotive market, something they had done from 1906 through the mid-1920s. They built automobiles until 1906. Later, they produced motorcycles.
The first offering was the Prinz which was powered by a two-cylinder engine. There were various versions of the Prinz, with the final version being the Prinz IV. It proved to be very popular with over a 500,000 produced. The engine was improved to produce a respectable 30 horsepower and top speed was in the 115 kph. The larger version of the Prinz was the NSU 1000TT powered by a four-cylinder transverse engine that sat behind the rear axle. Due to its excellent weight distribution and performance characteristics, it became very popular with racers. The 1200TT had a larger engine which improve the cars overall top speed. However, many favored the 1000TTS due to its ability to race in the 1-liter class.
