1959 Buick Electra Model Years

The Buick names of Roadmaster, Super, Century, and Special were replaced by the entry-level LeSabre, intermediate Invicta, and the top-of-the-line Electra in 1959. They wore completely new and dramatic styling with blade fins sweeping from the front of the body rearward, slanted headlights, rounded rear bullet-shaped taillights, and plenty of chrome trim and brightwork. Gone were the traditional tooth-comb grilles, faux portholes created by stylist Ned Nickles, and the VentiPorts.

All General Motor cars were new for 1959, responding to styling pressure from Chrysler's finned 1957 line. The over-the-top ornamentation used of the 1958 Buick models were replaced by understated accents and tasteful design cues, albeit retaining a downplayed version of 1958's diamond-tooth grille.

The LeSabre and Invicta shared a wheelbase size of 123-inches, with the Invicta being powered by a larger engine. The Electra used the same 401 CID V8 engine of the Invicta installed in a larger 126.3-inch wheelbase chassis. The Electra had an overall length of 220.6-inches, and the Electra 225 model, named for its overall length in inches, measured 225.4-inches.

The 401 cubic-inch V8 engine had overhead valves, five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, and delivered 325 horsepower at 4,400 RPM. It was backed by a Twin Turbine Dynaflow transmission or an optional Triple Turbine Dynaflow. Stopping power was by four-wheel drum brakes, with the front being 12-inch finned aluminum drums.

Body styles on both the Electra and Electra 225 were a hardtop, sedan, and a convertible coupe. The sedan had a factory base price of $3,860, the hardtop at $3,970, and the convertible coupe at $3,820. The Electra 225 Series added approximately $3,000 to the base price. Additional features of the Electra 225 included extra-wide moldings, Electra 225 script on the front fenders, an outside rearview mirror, Super Deluxe wheelcovers, a plusher interior, and power windows. The convertibles had leather interiors and a power top. Front bucket seats were optional on the convertible.
