1956 Buick Series 40 Special

Buick began using the 'Special' name in 1936 and usual was applied to the lowest-priced model in the lineup. After World War II, the Specials were given all-new bodywork which was the first new design for the series. Power was from a 248 cubic-inch engine which had been used since 1937. A larger 'Fireball' straight-eight was added for 1951, along with a two-door hardtop coupe bodystyle. For 1954, the Specials received a new chassis, body, and 'Nailhead' V8 engine.

In mid-1955, Buick introduced the Special Riviera which was the first four-door pillarless hardtops ever produced. The following year, the 322 cubic-inch V8 engine which offered 236 horsepower and a Variable Pitch Dynaflow automatic transmission reduced acceleration times, with zero-to-sixty mph taking less than ten seconds to accomplish. Buick earned two NASCAR victories for the year and achieved 3rd place in industry sales.

For 1956, over 58% of all Buick sales were for the Series 40 Special. Bodystyles included a 2- and 4-door sedan, hardtop and hardtop coupe, convertible coupe, and a station wagon. Pricing began at $2,415 for the 4-door sedan and rose to $2,780 for the station wagon. The most popular bodystyle was the hardtop which accounted for 91,025 sales. 66,977 buyers selected the 4-door sedan and 38,672 selected the 2-door version.

Changes included new taillights, round wheelhouse cutouts, and slight changes to the grille. Three oval Ventiports could be found on each of the fenders.
